Since the late XIX century for studio photography actively used as a props painted or wooden aircraft, balloons, cars and trains. Especially their popularity increased at the beginning of the First World War. Soldiers did such shots to send home to friends and relatives. Such playful portraits could be created not only in photo studios, but also in specially equipped places in amusement parks.

Photos from this collection collected a professor of art history and anthropology at the College of Connecticut Christopher B. Steiner. Pictures taken from the beginning of the First World War to the end of World War II. The soldiers from Germany, France, Holland, the USA and the Baltic States were posing. In the frames captured army humor, the spirit of camaraderie, childish fun and the possibilities of the masters of the photoshop in the early twentieth century.
