One of the prime attractions of this park is its Japanese wisteria. The gradual changes though these picturesque blossoms of light pink, purple, white, and yellow trusses conjure up images like those on slowly unfurled picture scrolls. Each year can be roughly divided into eight thematic chapters.

The Japanese love flowers, and wisteria are among their favorites. Wisteria are called fuji in Japanese, like Mt. Fuji, but unlike the mountain, the flower is pronounced by stressing the second syllable.

One of the best places to view fuji flowers is the Ashikaga Flower Park in Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture. Ashikaga Flower Park features lots of blue, white and pink fuji, as well as yellow laburnum (Japanese: kingusari) that look like yellow colored fuji.

The fuji in Ashikaga Flower Park are usually in full bloom in the beginning of May, one to two weeks later than the fuji of Tokyo. Because Ashikaga Flower Park is considered one of the best spots to view fuji flowers in Japan, the park can be very crowded even on weekdays during the peak season.

By creating wisteria tunnels, Japanese allow the woody vines to distribute evenly for sunlight while the flowers hang gracefully cascading in various shades of pastel, a sight that will definitely give you multiple eye-gasms.

The tunnels in Ashikaga Flower Park are at full bloom late April to early May. Make sure to visit during this period, otherwise instead of being filled with colorful flowers you might catch the tunnels tangled with dull, lifeless branches.

These purple waterfalls - wisteria - large enough vines, reaching the height of a six-storey home, which produce fragrant flowers, gathered in the overhanging brush.
