The artist Matthew Picton has created extremely detailed paper sculptures of different cities like Amsterdam, San Francisco and New York.
Cities are often described as living organisms; viewed as subject rather than object. Matthew Picton engages with this tradition of humanising the city by deconstructing the clean, uncompromising aesthetic of the cartographic city plan and imbuing it with the unique history and culture of each place.
These sculptures transform the two dimensional mapped image in to multi layered sculptures, seperating out the layers of communication, transportation and river systems that comprise the current city. The extraction of the lines of infrastructure from the background data allows the complex organism that comprises each city to become visually transparent.
The sculptures present a layered historical approach to the evolution of the contemporary city organism, past incarnations of the urban form are contained within them. The key periods in history of division and change are incorporated, the past is reconstituted and made visible once more.
The sculptures in this exhibition set elements of film, posters and stills within the cartographic landscape of the cities in which they are set. It is almost as if the city forms provide the stage set for the cinematic imagery that has been fragmented across the surfaces.
